Zigbee and Matter: Differences and Using Them Together

A short look at what each standard does, where it shines and how they can work together.

Zigbee is a low-power wireless protocol that forms a mesh. It has long powered small battery or mains devices such as sensors, switches and plugs, and every new device strengthens the network.

Matter is a newer application layer that aims to make devices from different brands speak the same language. It runs over Wi‑Fi, Thread and Ethernet and promises brand-independent compatibility.

In practice they complement each other. Zigbee is mature, affordable and offers a wide device family; Matter makes different ecosystems talk more easily. For residential projects today, the safest path is a stable Zigbee backbone with Matter added through the gateway.

When deciding, weigh device variety, offline operation, future growth and installation cost. A locally run gateway lets you make those three decisions independently.
