Zigbee at Home: How It Works and How to Set It Up
From sensors to switches: Zigbee’s role in the smart home and practical tips for a solid setup.
Zigbee is a low-power wireless network in which devices relay for each other and strengthen the mesh. That makes it ideal for sensors that run for years on a battery.
Typical home use: door/window and motion sensors, water and gas detectors, wall switches, curtain modules and smart plugs. All of them meet in one system through a Zigbee gateway.
For a robust network, mains-powered devices (plugs, switches) act as routers and sensors attach to them. Watch out for metal enclosures and thick walls, and add a router device in between if needed.
When installing, place the gateway centrally first, then add devices from near to far. This lets the mesh form properly.
